Modeling Coastal Freak Wave Occurrence

چکیده
Fishermen frequently suffer accidents and may even drown when they are swept into the sea by coastal freak waves near shore of northeastern Taiwan. To accurately predict deformation free surfaces violently strike structures, smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) model with a nonlinear mesh-free numerical approach was adopted in this study. Eight cases based on an actual wave accident were simulated. The results show that maximum splash height breakwater dependent not only incident but also existence armor blocks. block installation reduces overflow discharge enhances horizontal throw speed more than five times.

Modeling of freak wave generation in a 3D-NWT
Freak waves are extreme ocean waves that are not predicted by traditional wave probability distributions. We study wave energy focusing, as a possible mechanism for freak wave formation, in a three-dimensional (3D) Numerical Wave Tank (NWT) solving fully nonlinear potential ow equations. The NWT combines a higher-order 3D-BEM and a Mixed-Eulerian-Lagrangian time updating of the free surface, ba...
متن کاملNonlinear four-wave interaction and freak waves
Four-wave interactions play an important role in the evolution of the spectrum of surface gravity waves. This follows from direct simulations of an ensemble of ocean waves using the Zakharov equation. The theory of homogeneous four-wave interactions, extended to include effects of nonresonant transfer, compares favourably with the ensemble averaged results of the Monte Carlo simulations. In par...
متن کاملDirectional Effects on Freak Wave Prediction
The last decade freak waves have become an important topic in engineering and science. The freak waves are sometimes featured by a single and steep crest causing severe damage to structures and ships. The freak wave studies started in the late 80’s and the high-order nonlinear effects on the freak waves were discussed in the early 90’s (i.e.Yasuda et al., 1992). Owing to the many research effor...
متن کاملMeasurement and modeling of Scholte wave dispersion in coastal waters
Inversion of Scholte wave is one of the most common methods to estimate the shear speeds in the bottom. This inversion involves running a forward model, with shear speeds in the sediment among the input parameters, and minimizing the data-model mismatch. A numerical model is developed based on the dynamic stiffness matrix approach to model the phase velocity dispersion of Scholte waves in this ...
متن کاملWhy SAR wave mode data of ERS and Envisat are inadequate for giving the probability of occurrence of freak waves
It would be highly desirable to have a global monitoring tool for the detection of freak or rogue ocean surface waves. Based on the SAR imaging theory of ocean surface waves developed already in the 1980's, it is argued that unfortunately, despite recent claims to the contrary, this is not possible using SAR wave mode data of the ERS and Envisat satellites. The main reason for this is that, due...
